Wellness Tips While Working Remotely

To manage your wellness effectively we need to consider 8 main areas of wellness that are specific to working remotely during the current climate. What we have done here in FitVision is list out the main points and developed some key tips to keep your wellbeing a priority. We may not have any control at the moment due to  the limitations that the Covid 19 virus has imposed upon us but we do have the opportunity to react to it in a positive manner.

We want to ensure that you are all physically and mentally in the best shape possible for when this storm eventually passes and we return to normal working conditions. We are a small business with most of our work being onsite for clients so we too are feeling the effects of the quick escalation of the current position that we have all been put in. But despite this we are planning for the coming weeks with optimism that we will still be able to serve our clients through other means.

Let us now look at how you at home can start to use this time wisely by giving you a brief overview of the different areas of wellness, followed by one simple tip in each of these areas.

Physical Wellness.

“Maintaining a healthy body through means of sleep, diet and exercise and seeking care when necessary.”

Tip:

Exercise: Regular physical activity as research shows boosts overall mood, which will obviously be impacted for those who may be in a more self isolated position than others. Below we have a link to a workout which is time efficient and easy to follow with no need for any equipment.

Nutrition: Your diet has a profound effect on your mood and with that nutritional education is key. It can be easy to let our eating habits slip when we are confined to working from home but as we all know the aftermath of eating junk is feeling like junk. Have a look at our video linked below which will give you some easy tips to follow to help you keep your mind and body fueled over the coming weeks.

Recovery: Now that you won’t necessarily be commuting to and from work you will have a great opportunity to engage in quality sleep patterns and recovery. As we all know we are creatures of habit and to get the benefits provided by recovery, sleep is no different. Let’s use this time to help create some beneficial habits that will carry over into our regular day to day once when we have all returned to the workplace. The video below will give you some great insights into how to develop better sleep habits.

Emotional Wellness

“Understanding your feelings and coping effectively with stress. It is important to pay attention to self-care, relaxation, stress reduction and the development of inner resources so you can learn and grow from experiences.”

Tip:

As humans we gravitate towards the negative bias naturally and during times of uncertainty we can fall into a fixed mindset. One thing to combat this is to remember all of the amazing things that we have done and that are in our lives. Using this time for short meditation can be a great way to alleviate stress and to remind us of some of the things we should be grateful for.

Social Wellness:

“Having a strong support network and meaningful relationships.”

Tip:

The benefit of technology now allows us to stay in contact with our friends and relatives despite the distance between us. Take the time to really benefit from these conversations and reflect on your relationships with those people closest to you. Video calling, through Skype/Google Hangouts, etc, can be a great way to still have the beneficial connections with those you care about while still considering your health.

Intellectual Wellness.

“Engaging in creative and mentally-stimulating activities. These activities should expand your knowledge and skills.”

Tip:

Use this time wisely, one of the things that always drops down the priority list is personal development. Pick up that book that you feel at this moment will have a genuine impact on your life and immerse yourself in it or give yourself the time to learn a new skill as there are so many fantastic online platforms that can aid you in this process.

Spiritual Wellness

“Developing a sense of meaning, purpose and a personal set of values.”Are these reflected in what you do e.g. your career?

Tip:

This is also an opportunity to review and reflect on your why? This will be a great chance for you to look at how you can reconnect with yourself through some very simple mindfulness techniques. You can find out more about these helpful steps in the blog linked below

Environmental Wellness

“Living in harmony with the environment. Cultivating an awareness of how your actions affect it, taking action to protect it and interacting with nature and your personal environment.”

Tip: Although we do need to be careful there is no reason why you can’t go get some fresh air and enjoy some time in the outdoors. Use your breaks from work to get out of the house and go for a walk or run to help clear your head.

Occupational Wellness

“Enjoying your occupational endeavors, appreciating your contributions and finding personal satisfaction and enrichment through work.”

Tip:

One of the benefits of remote working is that we do get some time away from distractions and it allows us to focus on our bigger picture projects and realign our priorities. Setting new goals for your career and your current role can at times be difficult in our always on driven society. We spend most of our days dealing with the here and now but not giving ourselves the chance to consider or plan for the future.

Financial Wellness

“Our ability to meet current and ongoing financial obligations, feeling secure in your financial future, and having the financial power and freedom to make choices that allow you to enjoy life.”

Tip:

Financial planning is difficult but essential and no more essential in this time of uncertainty. Whether you are a small business or looking at it from a family perspective it is time to plan for what the worst case scenario might look like. We need to take resolution in the fact that these crucial conversations, although difficult, can pave the way to more financially stable times and keep those most important to you supportive at this critical time.
